June 2012

06/02/2012

I guided a group of 4 guests, one of whom caught a small king salmon on a K-14 Kwikfish, and a second of whom caught a rainbow trout and hooked, but lost another king salmon on a Kwikfish.

06/03/2012

I had a day off today, and spent it taking fishing trip reservations, working on tackle, and going to the store. Weather was wet today –but the weather report for this coming week is that conditions should be drier — although there is still a 20% chance of rain listed for each day.

We are getting to that portion of the season where the king salmon run is building significantly, and I expect our success rates to increase along with additional larger fish being caught by our guests.

We still have some availability in the next 10 days — mostly afternoon space, but also a limited number of morning seats as well. Give us a call soon, if you would like to join us on a peak season king salmon fishing trip. 907-746-2199

I guided an afternoon group of 2 guests, 1 of whom caught a king salmon on a #6 Vibrax Spinner. Both guests also had some light bites on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers, but only managed to briefly hook a couple fish with that method.

06/07/2012

I guided a group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a king salmon on Fired Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers. It was a very quick and successful trip, as we only fished one spot and caught the fish very quickly. The two larger fish weighed 27 and 32 pounds, some of the larger salmon my boat has taken lately. During the trip we saw a fox swimming across the river and were able to boat quite close to it where one go the guests snapped a couple pictures.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, and no one caught a fish. We saw king salmon rolling in some of the spots we fished and the guests spent a considerable amount of time fishing those locations, however, after an intense weekend morning fishery and plenty of boat traffic, we were unable to land any fish in the aftermoon.

06/10/2012

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a king salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers. The largest salmon weighed 18 pounds.

FIRST DAY OF NO BAIT ==

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, and no one caught a king salmon. One guest briefly hooked a king salmon on a K-11 Kwikfish.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, none of whom even managed to hook a salmon.

06/21/2012

I guided a group of 3 guests, one of whom caught a small king salmon on a #5 silver/black Flashtrap Spinner. We saw a few king salmon rolling in several spots that we fished. but only the one person managed to hook a fish.

The Deshka River king salmon escapement through the Alaska Department of Fish and Game counting weir is now running behind what is needed to reach the minimum spawning escapement goal — Sport harvests have been significantly reduced by regulations that only allow the use of single hook artificial lures and only allow king salmon fishing down stream from the counting weir. Even so, the Fish and Game Department may close the sport fishery for king salmon on the Deshka River within the next few days.

06/22/2012

I had the day off today, but we learned the Alaska Department of Fish and Game issued an emergency order closing the entire Susitna River Drainage to king salmon fishing starting Monday June 25.

I am currently not scheduled to guide a fishing trip on Saturday, but anticipate guiding my last king salmon guests for the 2012 season on Sunday June 24.

WE are in the process of contacting guests to see if the would like to reschedule king salmon trip reservations or receive a refund for any king salmon fishing trips we have scheduled to guide in the 2012 season after Sunday June 24.

We expect to start seeing some of the first early silver salmon and chum salmon arriving by the 2nd week in July.

06/23/2012

I took family members down the Susitna River to visit my nephew, Luke Warta, who has been working on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Susitna King Salmon study. Luke has been helping operate two Department fish wheels and one drift net used to capture, measure, and radio tag king salmon on the lower Susitna River.

When we arrived we learned that the number of king salmon being caught in both the fish wheels and the drift net had already dropped off significantly. In addition, Luke told us that nearly all the fish they were currently catching were small males.

It is good to see the Department of Fish and Game doing some studies of the Susitna River drainage king salmon populations.

While on the trip we also explored and fished 3 different locations where clear water entered the Susitna River, but only saw a few small jack king salmon in one of them, and were unable to hook any fish. We also fished a bit at the Deshka River on our way back, and while we saw some salmon rolling were unable to get any to bite late on a hot sunny day.

06/24/2012

I guided a group of 3 guests on a morning king salmon trip, 2 guests caught small king salmon. Both king salmon were caught while casting with #5 Silver / Black Flashtrap Spinners. Water temperature was warm and most of the fish we saw were finning and rolling near the Deshka River confluence with the Susitna River.

We travelled all the way to the weir fishing several holes along the way, but caught both fish at the river mouth. We only saw one king salmon in the 7 miles above the mouth, and less than 200 fish had swum past the weir on the previous day. The Deshka king salmon run seems to really be falling off.

This was our last day of the 2012 king salmon fishing season.

For those interested in charter salmon fishing trips in the Mat-Su Valley, we hope to resume guiding salmon charters on approximately July 10 when there may be some chum and silver salmon available.
