Our Alaska fishing in November often starts with ice fishing for rainbow trout, Arctic Char / Dolly Varden, and landlocked salmon. We usually wait until the ice has time to thicken with ice fishing trips often starting near or after Thanksgiving. Check back later in the month for updates on ice and fishing conditions.
KING SALMON REGULATIONS — We are waiting to see what 2019 Alaska king salmon regulations will be for the Mat-Su Valley streams where we usually guide king salmon trips during May, June, and early July. With a likely low projection for the 2019 king salmon season we are uncertain as to how the 2019 king salmon season regulation will start. After talking with Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) Area Management Biologist, Sam Ivey, I am expecting the Department should release the 2019 season starting king salmon regulations on November 15 at the Mat-Su Salmon Symposium in Palmer.
December 5, 2018 — We are still waiting for word from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game concerning what our 2019 king salmon regulations will be for Mat-Su Valley freshwater fisheries. I talked with an ADF&G spokesperson today and was told that the official Deshka /Susitna River king salmon projections should be coming out soon — and that 2019 king salmon regulations should be coming out soon as well.
Ice Fishing — Ice conditions have been good on most Mat-Su Valley lakes since Thanksgiving — although the large Southcentral Alaska earthquake near Point MacKenzie certainly cracked some of that ice. Fortunately it doesn’t take long for cracked ice to refreeze in the fissures and anglers have been out on the ice catching fish since that time. At this point my availability to guide ice fishing trips will start on December 18.
